How the EMI is calculated
EMI (Equated Monthly Instalment) is worked out on a reducing-balance basis using the standard formula EMI = P Γ r Γ (1+r)βΏ Γ· ((1+r)βΏ β 1), where P is the loan amount,r is the monthly interest rate (annual rate Γ· 12 Γ· 100) and n is the number of months. Early instalments carry more interest and less principal; later ones flip, so the loan clears steadily over the tenure.
What changes your monthly EMI
- Loan amount β a bigger principal raises every instalment.
- Interest rate β even 1β2% makes a large difference over a long tenure.
- Tenure β a longer tenure lowers the monthly EMI but increases the total interest you pay.
- No Cost EMI β the interest is offset by a discount, so you pay close to the sticker price.
Tips to lower your EMI
- Put down a larger upfront amount to reduce the financed principal.
- Compare credit-card, debit-card and personal-loan EMI rates before you commit.
- A higher credit score usually unlocks a lower interest rate.
